Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs
Introduction
My website is a personal observation and is not meant to provide a definitive record of the history of The Hi-Fi Combo, nor indeed a comprehensive coverage of the Scottish or Ayrshire music scene in 1966, all of which were thriving with the Scottish groups holding their own whilst supporting the chart-topping bands of the time. However it will certainly provide an insight into the era as I recall it, as well as some reminders of the many other popular Scottish bands on the scene.
The Targets, The Gladiators, The Vikings, The Meridians, The Redhawks, Maureen & The Thunderbirds, The Golden Crusaders, Eden & The Exiles, The Black Orchids, The Kimbos, Dave & The Arrows, The Lively Set, The Soul Pakk, The Corsairs, The Trolls and The In Set. Also noted are the many chart bands and some of the characters I met and worked with along the way. Those included The Kinks, the Troggs, The Ivy League, Crispian St Peters, Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band, Chris Farlowe, DJ Stuart Henry, Promoter Andy Lothian, Producer Claire Francis plus many many more.

Both the Hi-Fi Combo and the Scottish music scene were, of course, there long before I arrived, and of course still thriving when I left to return to my nursing studies, so I’ll leave any in-depth analysis to others who may have studied both subjects. Indeed, should anyone wish a comprehensive insight of the time they could do worse than read the excellent “The History of Scottish Rock and Pop” [all that ever mattered] by Brian Hogg published by Guinness Publishing or indeed the equally excellent "Big Noise - The Sound of Scotland" by Martin Kielty - subtitled "The history of Scottish rock'n'roll as told by the people who made it", published by Black & White publishing. Martin kindly contacted me whilst preparing his work and invited my contributions and I was delighted to assist so I'm in both books plus his follow up "Big Noise from a Wee Country". If you fancy buying the books here is what they look like [below]. I think they are brilliant.
So, what was it like being a major Scottish Pop Star in Scotland during 1965/1966? I am frequently asked that very question by my family and friends. They always say to me - as they beg for my autograph - "So, what was it like being a major Scottish Pop Star in 1965/1966 Eddie?
Well, I would love to tell you, but unfortunately I cannot because, as it transpired, The Hi-Fi Combo - and I - sadly didn’t quite make it big. In fact to be perfectly honest, I/we didn't even quite make it small either, although the band did of course achieve a few sentences in the aforementioned excellent books. Still, looking back is really nice, even if nostalgia - as they say - isn’t what it used to be.
So come on! Jump into the back of our red transit van, covered with the fans' graffiti, and do join me on a trip back to the Scottish club scene of 1965-1966. You might enjoy it. Any nice comments are welcome - just send them to me by email to : edwardbayly@aol.com or to my personal email address: edwardbayly@aol.com
